EDMI – The
Company Background
In 1977 John Flood and Neil Gibson,
2 Australian electrical engineers with Electricity Authority of
Queensland, established Electronic Design and Manufacture Queensland
Pty Ltd (EDMQ) to provide electronic design services and
solutions.
EDMQ
scored a major breakthrough when in 1982 it won the contract to
design and install the scoreboards at Q.E.II Stadium and the
Chandler Velodrome for the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. These
scoreboards were custom designed by EDMI utilizing what was
then the latest technology to meet the stringent requirements of the
games.
In 1986, EDMQ designed the
Rainmaster automatic sprinkler system which has since been installed
in the Federal Parliament House, Brisbane's South Bank Parklands and
prestigious golf courses such as Royal Pines on the Gold Coast. It
also developed Railmaster, a telemetry and information system
Queensland Rail.
In 1990 EDMQ was renamed
Electronic Design and Manufacturing International (EDMI) in
preparation for internationalization thrust.
EDMI
was contracted by Victorian Electricity to design and produce
Electricity Meters for the state of Victoria. This resulted in the
birth of EDMI’s Mark 1. Pleased with the success of this meter, the
partners proceeded with the development of the Mk 3 meters, a
cost effective class, high accuracy class 0.2 meter with
state-of-the-art features such as fibre ring communication, harmonic
analysis, remote readings, data logging.
In the year 1996-1997 EDMI
also started the development of the Mk 6 Genius meter, the
PSQM Power watch, a transformer insulation monitor and DDR.
To support its R & D growth and to
enable it to bring the products into the international market,
considerable funding was needed. In 1996 Bridex Singapore was
invited to acquire a 30% shareholdings in EDMI. As part of
the deal EDMI Asia was set up in Singapore to handle
international marketing.
To realize its potential of
becoming a player in the global metering market, the Board of
EDMI re-focus the core business from contract design into a
specialized meter design and manufacturing company capable of
supplying advance, customize metering products to the world market.
The Mk 6 Genius meter production was started in Brisbane in 1998.
EDMI
– Research & Development
With its roots developed from R & D
competency, EDMI’s core business is build on advance technology,
design innovation and software competency.
Over the last 3 years, EDMI
allocated about $1 million in its product R & D and various related
activities such as testing and market research, which amounting to
approximately 10% of its sales revenue.
Currently, the Mk10 is in the latest
addition to EDMI’s series of meters. The Mk 10 Atlas meters which
targets the high volume- low cost, highly class 1 markets, had
completed its design cycle. It retains most of the outstanding
features of the Mk 6 meters using technology advances and design
competency to enable it to be built at lower cost.
The highly sophisticated and
accurate meter Mk 11, presently under development, will be ready for
testing in the last quarter of 2004. This is targeted at the highly
accurate class 0.2 market, and is expected to replace the classic Mk
3 meter in years to come.
